The course explores and analyze literary and cinematic accounts of violence during major historical events such as World War II, Soviet collectivization, political purges, genocide, and Soviet-Afghan war. We will consider Soviet/Russian literature and films, including works by Isaac Babel, Andrei Platonov, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Sergei M. Eisenstein and Aleksei Balabanov.
