SGES Graduate Student Travel Funds

Overview

The department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies has limited funds to support graduate students traveling to conferences, professional meetings, seminars, workshops, and other professional development activities related to their field of study. Graduate students may receive up to the below benchmarks during the academic year, on a first come, first served basis as funding remains available.

Award Details

Funding benchmarks for the 2024-2025 academic year are as follows: $200 for travel without presentation and $400 for travel with presentation/workshop participation.

Funding amounts are based on projected travel expenses with the maximum amounts listed above. If the requested expenses are less than the benchmarks above, students may submit additional requests up to the maximum amounts listed.

Application Details

Applicants should send the following information via email to the Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, and Administrative Associate.

  1. Name, Date, location, website (if applicable) for conference/workshop
  2. Presentation Abstract or justification (evidence of acceptance if applicable)
  3. Travel Budget including estimated costs with requested amount

Administration of Award

Funds cannot be distributed directly to individuals, but must be used for purchases made by the department’s administrative associate on behalf of the candidate. Such purchases usually include airfare, lodging, or registration fees. Mileage, per diem, or other expenses can be reimbursed only after the travel has concluded.

Upon receiving the award, recipients need to fill out a Concur Travel Request and forward the confirmation to the Administrative Associate. If Concur will not allow you to create a request, please contact the Administrative Associate.

Other

Students should also seek funding from outside the department, most notably the Graduate Student Travel Fund supported by KU Student Senate. Their website contains links to other funds that may be relevant.
