The course provides a general introduction to politics and culture(s) of Muslim societies by examining pressing issues such as abortion, capital punishment, gender issues, nuclear weapons and censorship and, in doing so, engages in exposition of the moral ethos that shapes their cultural and sociopolitical practices. By showing a rich diversity of Muslim communities in terms of cultural mores, religious practices, and legal and political dispositions, the course will challenge the essentialized notion of a “Muslim world,” which is usually presented in the West as a monolithic society.
