MA/PhD in Russian Literature Reading List

This list acquaints you with the principal works of Russian prose, poetry, and drama from medieval times to the present. Some of these works will be studied in your courses. Please consult the general guidelines (such as MA/PhD qualifying exam expectations) and the secondary source list at the end of this reading list for critical approaches that will help you learn this material. Some authors and works appear on the list twice: for example, Chekhov is included in both the 19th-century and the 20th-century sections. This is done to indicate that students who choose to focus on either of these periods for their MA exam should know these authors and their works listed.
